How To Use The Apple Podcast App On Apple Watch

Are you an Apple Watch owner? Are you struggling to learn its features? Do you want to use The Apple Podcast App on the watch?

If yes, do not worry, we are here to help you.

The Watch OS5 feature we were most excited about was Apple finally bringing the podcast app to the Apple Watch. Let’s look at how to set up and play podcasts on the Apple Watch.

The Watch has continued to become more and more independent from the iPhone, but the lack of a podcast app is one of the main things that’s kept us from leaving our iPhones behind more often. But Apple’s native Podcast app is finally available now.

The app will automatically sync and download recent podcasts from your Listen Now section, so they are available offline when you’re away from your iPhone. The Listen Now section is where new and current episodes you are listening to appear.

However, there’s not much customization that can be done in this section. If you want a bit more control over what shows are available on your Apple Watch, you can choose specific podcasts you may want to sync over rather than shows from the Lisa Now section. To do this, go to the Watch app on your iPhone, tap on the Podcast section, and select.

Custom instead of listening now from here you can see. What shows you want Available offline now you’ll have just the recent episodes from the shows you want whenever you go workout or go for a walk away from your iPhone.

Apple Podcast App On Apple Watch Along With Its Features

If you have the cellular version of the Apple Watch with a data plan activated, you have access to Apple’s full catalog of podcasts from anywhere in the world via streaming, just like with Apple Music. You can still have shown downloaded to the watch using the method above, but you don’t have to worry about whether what you want has been downloaded or not.

This is a major advantage Apple’s Podcast app has over third-party apps and Watch OS5, and this is notable since Apple also added the ability in Watch OS5 for background audio to play on the Apple Watch for third-party apps. This means there are other podcast apps like Overcast that can provide a solid Apple Watch experience. They just don’t have the ability to stream.

How To Connect It?

When setting up your watch, connect it to your Bluetooth speakers and headphones.  After doing that connect the Apple Watch to your speakers.

After that:

There are two options to follow

  • Open the app and scroll through the list of podcasts and choose the one that is to your liking.
  • Or tap on library scroll through downloads and choose the one that you want to play.

Stations

One Stations, one of the biggest issues with the Apple Podcast app is we were never sure what is going to play next, what episode, or what show is going to come up next after we were done listening to the current show. Well, using Stations in the Apple Podcast app really helps solve that.

  • So go ahead and open your Apple Podcast app and make your way, to the library tab at the bottom.
  • Then we are going to tap the three dots up at the top and you’ll see New Station is an option.

After that, you are going to make a new station, call this, whatever name suits your taste and can easily be remembered. Now on this station, you can choose which of the podcasts already following some podcast channels will appear in this station.

We are going to choose the podcast we don’t know Apple Insider movies on the side and maybe Honking Insider those three shows.

Now Whenever there’s a new episode for these shows, they will appear on this station. You can choose to have the newest display first. You can group the episodes by show if you want to have more than just the latest episodes.

You can also do the two most recent episodes right there. Media type. You can choose just audio or video episodes. Most people don’t really do any video podcasts. And then We are going to uncheck this. Right now. You probably want to leave the not played only so only shows that you haven’t listened to appear in this list. But I’ve listened to all these episodes. You want to make sure you see some on the list.

So, with those settings, go back and now you’ll see. Here is the new station. This shows the newest episode of the three shows that you are following in this.

Now if you go to hit the three dots,

  • Go to station settings.
  • You can choose unplayed only
  • Then it’ll just show only the episodes you haven’t played.

Whatever episode is going to play next is going to match this list exactly. If you start playing this Home Kit Insider episode, you will now open the Now playing screen, and go down to playing Next. The next episodes will match exactly what the station is showing me, and that’s again, one of the biggest struggles I’ve had with the app.

And this feature really helps you know what episodes are going to play after the one you are currently listening to. So highly recommend you use stations to separate your shows and know what playlists are going to be playing and what. Order all of that, So that’s the stations.

Sleep Time

Apple Podcasts also have a cool feature on their sleep timer. For this, you must go to a show with chapters so in this you are going to go to the Apple Insider Podcast. You can play episodes there. When you open the Now Playing screen, you can Scroll down a little bit, and you’ll see the sleep timer option right there.

When you tap Sleep Timer, you have a standard option like pause this and five 10-15 minutes. You can do it when the current episode ends, and you can even do it when the current chapter ends. We thought that was a cool feature. We didn’t see that in the podcast app, Pocket Cast. But when the chapter ends it is cool.

Let’s say listening to a show, it’s late at night, you’re getting tired, and you want it to stop soon, but you want to make sure you don’t miss anything. Well, Sleep when the current chapter ends, we think is a great designation for when to pause the current podcast playing.

Search Tab

All right Three is in the Search tab here in the Apple Podcast app. In the Search tab, you know you can of course search for shows like Land of Giants and We’ll pull up the full podcast. You could follow them and all that, but if you flip this search tab over to your library, you can search for episodes or even just search for text in the episode descriptions of the shows that you follow.

Let’s say you are trying to find that recent episode of Movies on the Side where they reviewed West Side Story. Well, you can do West Side Story and it will pull up that episode that you typed, and it will also pull up other episodes that might have those search terms in the podcast description. So maybe you. Remember your podcast host talked about microphones?

Or maybe the ATP guys were talking about the M1 Ultra where you can type M1 Ultra, and you can see the episode that talks about M1 Ultra. Here’s one of those ATP podcasts. That search feature is great, especially if you’re trying to find a specific episode.

Settings

One of the quick tips, there are some podcast app settings in the Settings app that aren’t available in the podcast app specifically. So, we suggest you go to the Settings app, go down to Podcasts and you’ll see some specific settings, some finicky details about downloading, playing over cellular data, all of that. But you could change the skip buttons.

Most people like to skip forward as much as possible for 60 seconds. Other podcast apps let you do 2 minutes or even more, but we like having 60 seconds. So, this way maybe you are hearing of the sponsored spot on your favorite show, and you’ve already supported that sponsor. You’ve already bought the thing you support the show you’re like, I probably don’t need to hear from the sponsor again.

Well, you can skip forward 60 seconds. Again, like 2 minutes. We find a lot of sponsored reads are about two minutes long. But you can customize the skip forward time and the skip back. Most people do about 30 seconds. So, if you skip forward but then you hear them start talking and you know the ad is over. You want to be able to skip back so we have a shorter skip back time than skip forward.

Siri Podcast Settings

The nice thing about using the Apple Podcast app is it has tight integration with Siri. You can ask Siri to play a new episode, the latest episode, or the first episode in a podcast, all just using Siri. Even skipping forward and back and changing the playback speed. So, you are going to activate Siri and ask it to play the latest episode of movies on the side.

And you’ll see it already starts playing right there. It’s playing the latest podcast. And now let’s say you want to skip 2 minutes forward because the skip button can’t be customized that much. But you can ask Siri to do that and there you go. It skips forward two minutes just by asking Siri on iPhone now. Now you can also ask it to change the playback speed two times faster.

There you go. So, you can change the playback speed, skip forward and back, and even Play the latest episode of a specific podcast, all by asking Siri. You can even ask your home pods to do that as well, which is cool.

Shortcut

Now, this last feature is a little advanced, but Apple Podcast has some great shortcut integrations on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. So, you are going to Go to the Shortcuts app and are going to create a new shortcut. And let’s say you want to share the link to the latest episode of the podcast that you hosted on social media.

You do this every week with movies on the side, Apple Insider, rather than going to the Apple Podcast app, going to the episode, trying to find the little three dots, copy the link. You can program it all in Shortcuts.

  •  So, you are going to add action and search for podcasts, and you can choose podcasts up here and it’ll show you all the activities available in Apple Podcast.
  • So, here you are going to choose to get episodes of Podcast and are going to tap where it says blank, the blank podcast.
  • Going to choose Movies on the side.
  • So, it’s going to get the episodes of that podcast, Movies on the Side.
  • Now you are going to add the get item from List Action and you are going to choose to get the last item that’s going to get the most recent published episode of that podcast.
  • Now, you are going to go back to the podcast actions and get details of the podcast episode and instead of store ID, go to get the store URL.
  •  So, it’s going to get the latest episode of Movies on the side and the specific link to that episode. Then you can add a copy to clipboard action.

Conclusion

You can add a quick look also. You don’t need to do this step, but just so you can see the link that it’s pulling. You are going to have a quick look when you run this Right. Interact with it at all. It’s going to get the latest episode of Movies on the side, get the specific URL and there it is. And it’s copied to your clipboard already. So now you can go to your social media app and paste that link and when people tap it, it will take them directly to that episode in Apple podcast.
